Singapore-Day 4 Climbing and Sands Casino

P1270477
Kiong picked Anja and I up at 7 am to head out climbing.  We left Ram at the hotel to sleep since he had been up until 3 am fixing a program bug for work.  We wanted to get an early start as we’d been rained on everyday in Singapore so far.  The climbing area is called the Dairy Farm (which it once was) and only about 15 minutes from our hotel.
P1270480
Kiong was curios about where we were going so he parked and hiked in the 20 minute approach with us.  I think this is what I love most about Kiong is you can really tell he has the curious adventure spirit.  Sometimes he would tell us to go places and check it out and say you take picture for me or we would report back if something was ok for him and his wife to go do.  Clearly there we some hotels we walked into like we owned that might not let Kiong and his wife just wonder around in for 10 minutes.  It is was a travel moment that made me appreciate so much of the US.  There are a few places we might not be allowed to go in the US but for the most part you can go checkout almost anything.
P1270484
It was climbing time and we started on a piece of quarried granite with bolts up the middle.  It was really slipper and where it was wet it was like glass.
P1270487
The Dairy Farm is also a nature center for school kids and they were taking tours the whole time.  As they hiked up the trail into the meadow every group of kids (about 8 groups) would do the same thing; we’d hear yelling of excitement, then clearly “rock climbers, rock climber.”  Well we found out later we were the first climbers the nature guides had seen climbing there on a weekday.
P1270490
We got two climbs in before the rain started.  We waited it out and got in another two top ropes before the real down pour started.  The climbing was enjoy about in a cool setting but nothing to fly around the world for.
P1270491
On the walk out we lucked out and I talked to one of the nature guides who said we could stand under the nature center building out of the rain after we hiked the 20 minutes out.  Otherwise we’d have been waiting in the rain.

Kiong dropped us for a little electronics shopping.  If you look at the picture pretty much ever shop was selling cell phones, cameras, laptop, or other electrons.  Crazy how can they all sell the same stuff.

Kiong dropped us at the end of this bridge to walk across, then go through the mall to the left of the lotus building then go up the elevator to the top of the White Sands casino.  It is so great to have a personal tour guide.  I love not planning anything we were going to do.

This was an indoor swimming pool.  Nope not ice, it is teflon panels.
P1280497
It was $20 per person to come up here and you were allowed to view the pool but not use it.  Anja loved the pool!  So much that she wished we’d spent the $300 per night to stay here one night so we could hangout and use it.
171532_10100283647689576_2517819_59543645_7367775_o
While we were hanging out enjoying the view and waiting for sunset some performers came out and did a routine.  Ram got some good long exposures.

P1280512
After the show was over we walked around and grabbed some great night shots of Singapore.

After hanging out on the roof we went for one more dinner with Kiong.  I got some fresh pressed cane juice which was pretty cool to try and watch.  Anja got some real strange looks when we left her at the table alone while we got food.  Kiong said someone told him foreigner normally don't come to this hawkie centre.

It was a pretty full day of Singapore activities and we were exhausted.  Definitely the highlight of Singapore was having Kiong as our tour guide.  It was an awesome tip but time to move on to climbing.

Singapore-Day 3 Sentosa

P1260429

We started off the day walking down to the Orchard Center mall where we wondered upon this climbing wall in the mall with a really long via ferrete route up it.  We would have headed up if it were not for the $40 per time price tag.

P1260436

The roof of the mall had a little roof garden with some funky figures.

P1260440

Kiong picked us up from the mall and took us over to a park with a good over look.  Below is a picture of a “reclamation project.”  i.e. building land in the ocean.

P1270443

We then headed over to Sentosa Island which is being developed as a resort island and we stopped and saw a bunch of hotels.  Kiong really wanted to pull up and see some of these places which normally he could not pull up to but as he said “with you I feel safe.”

P1270448

The first activity stop on the island was the go cart/soap box car/alpine slide.  It was pretty fun they had a ski lift for it which took you to the top of the hill. It was fun blasting past all the other tourists there who apparently did not subscribe to the American pastime of FLOOR IT!

After the alpine slides we rented bikes for an hour and took a little ride around the island.  It was really fun because we kept riding to spot and say wait did Kiong bring us here.

P1270458

After biking it was off to catchup with Kiong so we hoped the cable car to get back to the main land.  It had some pretty great views and Kiong met us at the end station.

A view of the cable cars from the end looking back at Sentosa.

Kiong took us to the Old Airport Road hawker centre for chili crab.  It was really good but pretty spicy.  Probably the most unique dish we had in Singapore.

171369_10100283646352256_2517819_59543604_6925197_o

After dinner we made a stop at Raffle's hotel, home of the first ever Singapore Sling.  Kiong dropped us and went to have a smoke.  It was a rip off at $27 for a drink but Ram wanted to get it for the novelty.  It was pretty good and a cool old time 5 star hotel.  Although the funniest moment was we realized we’d forgotten the cell phone in Kiong cab so we were worried when he’d pick us up but as luck would have it we stumbled on a computer in the hotel and brought up facebook and posted on his wall to pick us up at 10:50.  Oh course Kiong got it and asked “how you do?”

Singapore–Day 2 SAFRA Climbing Wall

We headed over the SAFRA Yishun Country Club which it turned out Kiong was a member of as a former soldier.  It had a huge 25m outdoor climbing wall, really cool!  After the typical jumping through hoops of a climbing gym we were setup to climb.  Unfortunately, Anja and I each got one climb in before it started downpouring only problem we still had the quickdraws up on the wall.
172272_10100283642150676_2517819_59543490_66597_o
It was ok though because inside this climbing wall structure was a two story bouldering cave so we headed inside.  The cave was really fun and for the first 2 hours (since it kept raining) we had it just to ourselves.

After climbing Kiong took us over to a Japanese restaurant that was pretty good.  I got some tai sashimi and Anja got some sake.
170679_10100283643453066_2517819_59543537_5225533_o
After dinner Kiong took us over to Chinatown which was crazy getting ready for Chinese New Year (CNY).
172111_10100283643677616_2517819_59543539_2765525_o
It is the year of the rabbit so cartoon rabbit figures and pictures were everywhere.

Singapore–Day 1

We landed at 5 am and took a cab over to the Lloyd Inn where we were staying.  Sadly they did not have a room we could check into until checkin time at noon so we had 7 hours to kill.  We went to get breakfast at 67 Killiney Rd it was just around the corner and turned out K had taken Anja and Ram here on there last visit.
P1240424P1240425
After breakfast we went for a walk around the area Anja and Ram had stayed on there previous trip.
P1240427
We wanted off our feet so we ended up wasting 3 hours away in McDonald’s on the web thanks for Ram.  We were trying to get into a free wireless all you need is a local Singapore number which we only had one which equaled one account for one computer.  When you register the password is sent by SMS to your phone.  We only had one active number so Ram back doored in.  Using a fictional phone number he generated an account which sent the password to the phone that didn’t exist.  He of course didn’t have the password so he clicked the forgot your password link and it sent the password to his email.  Silly Singapore web experts Ram out smarted your automatic password recovery.  Although the funniest part was a British guy saw us all on laptops and came over and asked about wifi and said “everyone told me there was no free wifi in Singapore.” Well we got him the hookup.
When we got out of the shopping mall at 11:45 to go check in it was downpouring so we hoped a cab back to the hotel.
P1240428
We napped for awhile and then Kiong called and came over to pick us up and took us to the East Coast hawker centre.
170589_10100283641601776_2517819_59543473_1311843_o
We got piles of food and had a nice huge dinner and got to see the ski360 water ski park.

Flying out-LAX to Shanghai and onto Singapore

We flew out from LAX at 11:20 am so we got up at 8 am at Kevin and Lauren’s and caught a cab to LAX.  Ram forgot to leave his keys for Jenny to move his car so we need to mail them home.

P1240420

Ram was a little hung over from the night before and slept away a lot of the 14 hour flight.

P1240421

Flight 1 done and we are in Shanghai.  Shanghai was a pain because we had to exit customs and go through security again just to transfer planes.  It also took up half a page of stamps in the passport which passport space which with 10 countries to go could be an issue.

P1240422

Anja and I got some good sleep in the airport and Ram got some wifi but facebook was blocked by China.  Our plane boarded at 11:10 pm (5 am LA time).  We’ve been traveling for 21 hours at this point and still had another 5 hour plane ride to land in Singapore at 5 am.

Expectation Singapore and Malaysia

SINGAPORE
In 2008 Anja went to Singapore for work and Ram came along for fun.  They had a good time while there and met a cool taxi driver named Say Kiong Yap.  They spent a bunch of time traveling around with him and had a great time so they want to go back.

We get in at 5 am after about 30 hours of travel and while there we are planning to meet up with Say Kiong Yap, get a Singapore sling, go to the water skiing tow cable park, and go climbing at Singapore's only climbing area the Dairy Farm.  We'll be staying at the Llody's Inn and plan to stay 5 nights there and leave Singapore by train to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

MALAYSIA

Malaysia is just north of Singapore with good looking steep limestone climbing in north Kuala Lumpur and it is a very easy plane ride from Kuala Lumpur to Phuket or Krabi, Thailand.  The climbing area is around an area called Batu Caves.  It is supposed to be steep limestone like thailand and very accessable. We plan to stay in the Batu Caves area for five days and then fly out to Phuket.

Climbing at Malibu and send off BBQ

We headed into Malibu for day 2 of climbing.  We headed to Stumbling Blocks area which requires a water crossing and the infamous traverse.  Ginger had never climbed at Malibu so we had warned her about the traverse but clearly we had not warned her enough as she was rather surprised.  Luckily no one went splash.

P1220404

Jenny, Ginger, and Anja on the traverse.

P1220406

Ginger in the toughest spot at the end of the traverse.

P1220411

We warmed up on this 5.8/5.9.

P1220412

Ginger on the upper part of the climb.

P1220416

Ken belaying.  It was a real busy Saturday at the Stumbling blocks so we only got in few more climbs but I was excited that after Anja hung the draws I lead Mr. Big a left traversing overhung 5.10d which I’d never led before although I had to hang once.

P1220417

Once we finished climbing we headed back to Kevin and Lauren’s for a send off BBQ.

P1220418P1220419

It was great!  Angela and John even made it out with their baby girl Eva who I had not gotten to met before leaving town.  I finished getting packed up and Ram partied into the night.
